Remarks 'Lake' from Old French 'lac' from Latin 'lacus' of the same source as Gaelic 'loch' and Latin 'lacuna', i.e., hole, pit, pool (p. 316 in Ref. 11979); 'Emerald', i.e., brightly or richly green (p. 406 in Ref. 11978), alluding to the blue-green or green iridescence on the back of adult fish and also to the resulting dark blue or blue-green appearance of the fish from loss of scales (Ref. 1998); 'shiner', i.e., a silvery fish (p. 1086 in Ref. 11978) alluding to the overall silvery coloration of this fish (on sides and ventral portions, Ref. 1998), from prehistoric 'skinan' (p. 474 in Ref. 11979).
