Remarks 'Lake' from Old French 'lac' from Latin 'lacus' of the same source as Gaelic 'loch' and Latin 'lacuna', i.e., hole, pit, pool (p. 316 in Ref. 11979); 'shiner', i.e., a silvery fish (p. 1086 in Ref. 11978) alluding to the overall silvery coloration of this fish (on sides and ventral portions, Ref. 1998), from prehistoric 'skinan' (p. 474 in Ref. 11979).
