Remarks 'basslet', i.e., small bass; 'bass' maybe related to Old English 'byrst', i.e., bristle, from Old English 'boers' which became 19th century 'barse', i.e., fish from a Germanic base '*bars-' (source of German 'barsch') as a cognate with '*bors-' and which underwent phonetic mutation to form 'bass' (Ref. 11979).
