Remarks Name used for individuals in the late first ocean year stage, usually weighing 1,800 to 3,600 g. 'Slivers' from 'sliver' of Middle English 'slivere' from 'sliven', i.e., to slice off, from Old English 'slifan' akin to Old English 'slaefan', i.e., to cut (p. 1109 in Ref. 11978).
