Fundulus relictus in Bermuda
Lover's Lake killifish
Go to Species Summary
Fundulus relictus   Able & Felley, 1988
Family: Fundulidae (Topminnows and killifishes)
picture () by
( not available )
Order: Cyprinodontiformes  (rivulines, killifishes and live bearers)
Class: Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes)
FishBase name: Lover's Lake killifish
Max. size: 9.7 cm TL (male/unsexed; Ref. 59051)
Environment: benthopelagic; non-migratory
Climate: subtropical
Global Importance: aquarium: commercial
Resilience:   High, minimum population doubling time less than 15 months (Preliminary K or Fecundity.)
Distribution: North America: endemic to Bermuda. Fundulus relictus is believed to be a descendant of the Fundulus heteroclitus - F. grandis species group originating from populations on the east coast of North America (Ref. 59062). It is presently believed that none of the killifish ponds in Bermuda contain mixed populations of Fundulus bermudae and F. relictus.
Biology: Endangered and endemic species found in Bermuda with highly fragmented populations and a very limited range. Found only in a limited number of isolated brackish water ponds and appear to form loose schools consisting of equally sized individuals (Ref. 59051). This species is regarded as omnivorous opportunistic feeder (Ref. The main predators to Bermuda’s endemic Fundulus populations include a variety of birds (mostly herons), and fishes (eastern mosquito fish Gambusia holbrooki, gray snapper Lutjanus griseus, American eel Anguilla rostrata). Additionally, it is believed that the introduced and invasive red-eared terrapin Trachemys scripta elegans is a significant predator in a limited number of ponds (Ref. 59051). Non-annual killifish. Is difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139)
Threatened: Not Evaluated, see IUCN Red List  , (Ref. 36508)
Dangerous:   harmless
Coordinator: Costa, Wilson J.E.M.
Main Ref: Huber, J.H.. 1996. (Ref. 27139)

Bermuda country information
Common names: Lover's Lake killifish Ref:  Outerbridge, M.E., J. Davenport and A.F. Glasspool, 2007
Status: endemic Ref:
Salinity: freshwater
Regulations: protected Ref:  Outerbridge, M.E., J. Davenport and A.F. Glasspool, 2007
Uses: no uses
Comments: Endemic to the islands of Bermuda and listed as a protected species in the Bermuda Protected Species Act 2003. Killifishes were described as abundant and widespread in the wetland communities of Bermuda during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but are now only found in nine isolated ponds. Two of these populations are F. relictus. Petersen population estimates in 2004 suggested that 8,508 fish were Lover’s Lake and 1,793 fish were in Bartram’s Pond (Ref. 59051). Local populations could include more undescribed Fundulus species (Ref. 35505). In addition to one naturally occurring Fundulus relictus population in Bermuda, there is one other population living in a man-made pond, (created by dredging), where F. relictus was intentionally introduced in the 1980s as a precaution against a possible extinction event (Ref. 59051). Also Ref. 27139.
