Distribution: Western Indian Ocean: Reunion, Mauritius and probably occurs in Comoros.
Diagnosis:   Dorsal spines (total): 7-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 9-10. Checks and operculum without scales. Pelvic fins jointed and attached to the body from their anterior part. The coloration of the body and the fins is grey to black for large specimens. The belly is lighter. Young adults are brownish yellow and have a series of darker and rounded spots on their side. The first dorsal usually has a black spot in its posterior part and is especially visible in young specimens, getting lighter as they age.
Biology: Euryhaline species which occurs in freshwaters in the lower parts of the rivers but can also be found in estuaries and in coastal ponds. Mostly encountered below 250 meters of altitude. Feeds on small invertebrates and small fishes. Not a migratory species and some populations complete their cycle in freshwater and brackish ones (Ref. 48660)
