Distribution: Europe: brackish waters along coasts of Gulfs of Bothnia, Finland and Riga, and in estuaries of large rivers; freshwaters of Europe (including Italy, Greece, Ireland, mainland Denmark to northern Germany and northern Norway, Sweden and Finland) (Ref 55856). Reported from 2 catchments, Forth and Clyde, in Scotland (P. Maitland, pers. comm.).
Diagnosis:   Dorsal spines (total): 6-8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-18; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 10-13; Vertebrae: 31-34. Caudal fin with 13 to 14 rays (Ref. 40476).
Biology: Inhabits hard bottoms (under stones) in streams, rivers and lakes, rarely in brackish coastal waters. Feeds on small bottom invertebrates, mainly insects, crustaceans. Contrary to statements in older literature, eggs and larvae of fishes are not a common foot item (Ref. 45167). Pink to yellow eggs are found in clumps attached to undersides of large stones (Ref. 41678). Fish of the year 2006 in Germany and Austria, because its presence indicates good water quality
