Distribution: Africa: Lake Kivu and its tributaries, Ruzizi and in the middle basin of the Akagera (downstream from Rusumo falls). It is also present in lakes Edouard and Albert and lakes Victoria and Kyoga.
Diagnosis:   Dorsal spines (total): 3-3; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-11; Anal spines: 2-3; Anal soft rays: 5-6. The anterior barbel reaches the middle of the eye but in general, it is very short, not reaching the anterior side of the eye; the posterior barbel always reaches beyond the anterior eye, sometimes including the anterior side of the operculae; lips well-developed. Sometimes, an outgrowth is present on the snout (Ref. 27626).
Biology: Inhabits inshore waters and rivers (Ref. 4967). Prefers sand and gravel substrate. Juveniles stay in riverine habitats while adults inhabit both riverine and lacustrine habitats. Gastropod mollusks are an important food item in the lake, while insect larvae are of equal importance in hard bottom areas. Plants, fishes, and crustaceans are also eaten. More plant material is consumed by juveniles (Ref. 34291). Oviparous (Ref. 205). A food fish for humans (Ref. 4537)
