Distribution: Africa: Senegal to the Chad basin. Absent in coastal basins between Gambia and Sassandra (Côte d'Ivoire) but Ref. 7094 and Ref. 272 report otherwise. Also found in the Nile (Ref. 2936).
Diagnosis:   Dorsal soft rays (total): 21-26; Anal soft rays: 13-16. Body depth 2.7-3.6x, head length 3.3-5.5x SL. Caudal peduncle 0.7-1.1x longer than wide. Rounded snout. Eye diameter 3.3 (juveniles)-7x head length. Scaly caudal with round lobes. Gray body more or less dark. Upper part of dorsal with black lines formed by a series of points on the inter-radial membranes. Juveniles with transverse black irregular bands on the sides; one black spot at extremity of caudal peduncle, one black humeral spot and sometimes one orange humeral spot.
Biology: Marco-herbivores, feed on submerged plants, Eichornia roots and periphyton (Ref. 28714)
