Distribution: Africa: Sudanian basins of Niger, Senegal, Gambia and Volta. Also in certain coastal basins, Comoé, Bandama, and Sassandra Rivers in Côte d'Ivoire and Tominé River in Guinea. Has been captured in Adrar, Mauritania and in the Bandingara Plateau in Mali.
Diagnosis:   Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-10; Anal soft rays: 8-8. Small sized species. Small mouth. Very small barbels. Lateral line generally complete, lower under the dorsal fin and rejoins median line at the level of the caudal peduncle. In some populations, lateral line might be incomplete. Body silvery with gray-blue reflections. Dark longitudinal band in middle of body ending with small round black spot on caudal peduncle. Dorsal often with oblique black band on upper half. Dorsal: 3 simple, Anal: 3 simple.
