Distribution: Africa: Nile, Niger, Volta Rivers systems and rivers of Guinea-Bissau. Also known from the Chad and Bandama Rivers (Ref. 2940).
Diagnosis:   Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-11; Anal soft rays: 8-8. Small sized species. Mouth oblique, opening about level of middle of eye. Barbels developed late in the Nile basin; big individuals may have well developed pairs. In West Africa, most specimens have no barbels. Dorsal and anal both with 3 simple rays. Yellowish black color with very fine black longitudinal stripe and 3 round spots aligned laterally. 1st spot at level of dorsal origin, 2nd, under the last dorsal ray, and 3rd on caudal peduncle. One dark spot at base of anal fin.
