Distribution: Africa: numerous coastal basins from Konkouré to rest of Volta. Was never observed in Sahelo-Sudanian basins.
Diagnosis:   Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-16; Anal soft rays: 8-8. Big mouthed, lower lip reduced and replaced by horny sheath. Very short barbels, anterior ones, posterior 7-15% head length. Scales with convergent streaks on posterior part. Long dorsal fin, last simple ray ossified at base (equal to head length in young) clearly longer head length in adults. Dorsal: 4 simple, 9-12 branched. Anal: 3 simple, 5 branched.
Biology: Differences in meristic and morphometric characteristics according to population. Body depth varies between 26-33% in Guinean zone and 34-43% in the Cavally and Nipoué. Caudal peduncles height per length ratio 100% in Cavally-Nipoue & about 140% in Guinean zone. Population of east of Ivory Coast has intermediary characteristics such as number of scales, around lateral line: 4.5 in Guinea and Ivory Coast, 3.5 in Ivory Coast east of Liberia. Maximum TL was recorded at 27.5 cm (Ref. 2801)
