Distribution: Africa: Ofin river and the Volta system in Ghana, in coastal rivers in Togo, in the Ouémé river in Benin, in the Ogun and the Oshun rivers, in the Niger delta and coastal rivers of Nigeria.
Diagnosis:   Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 72-73; Anal soft rays: 55-56; Vertebrae: 53-54. The light, yellowish coloration facilitates identification. Head oval-shaped in dorsal outline; snout rounded. Frontal fontanelle usually short and squat (`sole-shaped'); occipital fontanelle small and oval-shaped. The supraorbital and the `dermosphenotic' bones become sutured. Tooth plates small. Pectoral spine robust and slightly curved. gill rakers long and distantly set. Suprabranchial organ well developed. Openings of the secondary canals of the lateral line appear as irregular white spots on the body.
Biology: Found more abundant in forest floodplain ponds, grassland floodplain ponds and marshes than in rivers (Ref. 31579)
