Biology: Inhabits vegetated and brushy stream margins and pools of creeks and small to medium rivers, and rocky and vegetated margins of lakes (Ref. 10294, 30578). Most commonly found in clear, silt-free rocky streams. Feeds on small crustaceans, insects and fish (Ref. 30578)

Transplanted in Atlantic drainages as far south as Roanoke River in Virginia, in Missouri and Arkansas River drainage in Missouri, Arkansas, southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma and in some western states. A popular fish sold in live fish markets (Ref. 53249).
