Distribution: Africa: Volta, Niger, Tchad, Shari and Congo basins. Known from the river basins of Niger, Benue, Volta and Ogun and also in the Chad basin.
Diagnosis:   Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 28-31; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 31-35. Young with dark band across body between anterior end of dorsal and anal which widens in the center and surrounded by a clear zone on each side in the form of a parenthesis; first dorsal and anal ray marked with black; this coloration disappears in individuals > 20 cm; Dorsal origin behind origin of anal fin; body depth 3.9-4.7 x SL; head length 3-5 x SL; head 2.3-3.3x longer than large.
Biology: Its electric organ discharge (EOD) is steroid-sensitive (Ref. 10763; 10764)
