Family:  Oreosomatidae (Oreos), subfamily: Oreosomatinae
Max. size:  23.2 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 230 - 1900 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: Mauritania (17°27'N) to Angola (11°07'S) and one single record in the subtropics caught off South Africa at 33°19'S, 2°20'E.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 4-6; Dorsal soft rays (total): 30-32; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 26-29. Prejuveniles and juveniles uniformly dark brown in color (Ref. 6548).
Biology:  Perhaps a midwater species, occasionally deeper.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 23 July 2014 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
