Family:  Apogonidae (Cardinalfishes), subfamily: Apogoninae
Max. size:  9 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; brackish; marine; depth range 40 - 80 m
Distribution:  Indo-Pacific: Red Sea to Tuamoto Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Rapa; throughout Micronesia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 8-8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-9; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 8-8. Reddish brown with 3 to 4 rows of black spots on the sides and unmarked fins (Ref. 37816). Eye yellow; white-rimmed black ocellus on operculum (Ref. 48635).
Biology:  Found in coastal mud flats and reefs to 10 m depth (Ref. 48635). Nocturnal species (Ref. 7300). Very cryptic and rarely seen, even at night (Ref. 48635).
