Family:  Fundulidae (Topminnows and killifishes)
Max. size:  7.8 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; brackish, non-migratory
Distribution:  North America: Altamaha River drianage and Okefenokee Swamp in southeast Georgia to south Florida, USA; isolated population in Fenholloway River system in west Florida.
Diagnosis:  This species is very similar to banded topminnow, Fundulus cingulatus, but can be distinguished by having 5 preopercular pores and red side of head and jaws on large male (Ref. 86798).
Biology:  Occurs in shallow, often ephemeral, water bodies, including ditches, marshes, and backwaters of sluggish creeks and small to medium rivers. Usually found near vegetation (Ref. 86798).
