Family:  Cichlidae (Cichlids), subfamily: Cichlasomatinae
Max. size:  40 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; pH range: 7.8 - 8.3
Distribution:  North America: Atlantic slope of northern Mexico. Endemic to the Tamasopo, Gallinas and Ojo Frio rivers in the Panuco River basin.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabits rivers. Feeds on snails and smaller fishes. Aquarium conditions: pH=7, H=3, 25°C water temperature, carnivore, egg layer, needs plant and rock cover, not easy to raise in tanks (Ref. 6398).
