Environment:  demersal; freshwater
Distribution:  Oceania: Northland, New Zealand.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-16; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 16-19; Vertebrae: 55-57. Jaw extends to posterior margin of the eye; eye is small; head displays a dorsal bulbous swelling behind eye, particularly in large individuals; caudal peduncle elongated. Principal caudal fin rays 11-13. Caudal fin rounded (Ref. 43717).
Biology:  Inhabits ephemeral areas that dry out over summer and autumn months, where it aestivates in damp areas or under tree roots and logs (Ref. 43717).
