Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Melanostomiinae
Max. size:  28.2 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 0 - 1000 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: Azores south to Mauritania, then from Angola to South Africa. Western Atlantic: USA to Bahamas, then from Brazil to Argentina. Western Pacific: Australia (Ref. 7300) and New Zealand (Ref. 5755). Also western Indian Ocean.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-18; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 17-21. Body elongate and slender. Short, blunt nonprotrusible snout. Barbel stem is black and bulb unpigmented (Ref. 37039).
Biology:  Mesopelagic species (Ref. 4468, 75154).
