Family:  Melamphaidae (Bigscale fishes or ridgeheads)
Max. size:  12.2 cm SL (female)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 0 - 2500 m
Distribution:  Southwest Pacific: New South Wales, Australia (Ref. 7300) and New Zealand (Ref. 5755). Southeast Pacific: Chile (Ref. 9068). Also in the Atlantic and southern Indian Oceans.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 2-2; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 7-9. Caudal peduncle relatively long. Lower 4th gill arch with the inter-raker spaces with spines (Ref. 37108).
Biology:  One of the largest and deepest-dwelling melamphid species. Feeds mainly on pelagic prey. Captured by bottom and midwater trawls (Ref. 26478). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
