Definition of Term

gill raker counts
(English) Gill rakers are counted on the first arch. A dissecting scope light is normally needed. Laying the fish on its back and holding the head with one hand, while manipulating the gill flap with the forefinger of the same hand, facilitates counting with a probe held in the other hand. It may be necessary to slit the ventral or dorsal gill cover connection in order to open the gill flap sufficiently to expose the arches. All rakers, no matter how small, are counted unless otherwise stated. Counts for the upper and lower limbs of the arch are separated by a + sign, e.g., 7 + 14. A raker situated at the joint of the upper and lower limbs is included in the count of the lower. (See also: gill arch, gill rakers)
(See also: gill arch, gill rakers)
