Deep bodied; large head and jaws; gut large (highly developed trailing s-shaped terminus); no midlateral pigment; large pigmented median finfolds; origin of dorsal and anal fin opposite each other; liver larger than in B. filifer and less recessed; melanophores larger and pigmentation heavier than B. filifer. Pigmentation: Preflexion: dorsal and ventral paired series, about 1 per myomere; single median series at notochord tip; patch on snout; embedded at otic region and ventrolateral to hindbrain; median series below liver; paired series on isthmus; by 9 mm, dorsal series with 1-3 per myomere; gular patch; patch above hindbrain; by 11 mm, scattered over dorsal fin and anal fin and associated finfolds; on margin of branchiostegal membrane. Flexion: concentrated proximally on ventral finfold, heaviest below liver; throughout dorsal finfold; along lower jaw; ventral series recessed; above and below terminal gut section. Postflexion: many per myomere in dorsal and ventral series; patch covers midbrain; at cleithral region; on opercle, and concentrated at nares. Transformation: 1 to several melanophores on each dorsal myomere. Sequence of fin development: caudal and dorsal and anal, pelvics, pectorals.
