Branchiostegal rays 7; pectoral rays 12-14; pelvic rays 7-9; gas glands 2; preanal length about 25% BL in yolk-sac larvae, increasing to about 70% before transformation; regularly spaced pigment patches along dorsal and ventral body, absent near end of tail. Pigmentation: Preanal fin formation: on top of gut, gradually spreading over abdomen; on branchiostegal region; on snout, lower jaw, and posterior angle of lower jaw. Anal fin formation: uniformly spaced saddles dorsally and ventrally along tail; ventral saddles more numerous. Transformation-juvenile: bold spotting on head and body persists. Sequence of fin development: pelvics, anal, second dorsal, first dorsal, pectorals. |
