Large head; large, nearly round eyes; large jaws with prominent teethe and tooth patch at tip of upper jaw; gut short, sigmoid; body sharply tapered in early larvae, robust in late larvae; distinctive pigment pattern with median gular series; Br2 photophores form at about 10 mm. Pigmentation: Preflexion-postflexion: 1 above and 1 anterior to forebrain; 1 above cerebellum; at lower jaw symphysis; on midline of gular region between urohyal and symphysis, usually 1 in larvae <4.0 mm, 2-4 in larger larvae; blotch above gas bladder; 1 embedded medially anterior to gut mass; beginning at about 12 mm, series on myosepta anterior to pelvic fins; in late larvae, myosepta of entire trunk outlined between pectoral and pelvic fin bases. Sequence of fin development: caudal, dorsal and anal, pectorals, pelvics.
