Teeth in 2 or 3 irregular series or in bands on premaxillary and dentary. Origin of anal fin more posterior than anterior 1/3 of body fin base (usually below the 12 to 15th dorsal rays). Body rather high and compressed. Branchiostegal rays 8. Attains 34 cm SL.
