Etymology: Scopelarchus: Greek, skopelos = a lantern fish + Greek, archos = anus (Ref. 45335);  stephensi: Named for John S. Stephen Jr. in recognition of his numerous contributions to the biology of fishes and to the eduction of scientists (Ref. 40783).

Description synthétique Morphologie | Morphométrie

Rayons mous dorsaux (Total): 8; Rayons mous anaux: 20 - 22; Vertèbres: 42 - 43. Pigment on pectoral fin limited to a narrow patch of melanophores between 2nd and 6th or 7th pectoral rays on medial third of length of fin; appressed pectoral reaching to pelvic insertion but not to anus; caudal fin depth 7.9-9.2 SL (Ref. 40783).
