Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect. Espinas dorsales (total): 0 - 1; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 7-8; Espinas anales 1-2; Radios blandos anales: 25 - 27; Vértebra: 30 - 31. Body scales with blue iridescence when live; distinct black lower lip with black chin bar; very slim body (body depth at dorsal-fin origin 20.6-22.9% SL; height at pectoral-fin origin 12.8-15.5% SL); 23-24 predorsal scales; 31-33 lateral scales and 25-27 anal fin rays (Ref. 57022).
