This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: D2 12-–13 (usually 12); A 12; pectoral fin rays 21-25 (mode 23); branched caudal-fin rays 8; anterior scales in the lateral line 2-4 with a spine; single preocular spine, absence of gill rakers on upper arch, ocular and interopercular flaps, and distinct antrorse lachrymal spines (Ref. 80495).
