Bedotiidae Rheocles vatosoa Stiassny, Rodriguez & Loiselle, 2002 Fr endemic   7.92 cm SL male/unsexed  Collected at Marovato Creek at Ambodivohitra Village, several kilometers north of Marovato Village on the road to Ambalamangy, Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) Province (Lokoho Drainage, Andapa basin). Formerly abundant throughout the basin. However, replacement of aboriginal vegetation covering the floor of the Andapa basin with rice paddies restricted the species to streams that drain the slopes of the surrounding mountains which still retain a measure of forest cover. Ongoing deforestration and the presence of exotic Gambusia holbrooki and Channa cf. striata pose the principal threats to the long-term survival of R. vatosoa (Ref. 42716).

More extensive sampling will no doubt extend that range (Ref. 33664). Also reported from Lake Kinkony (Ref. 13296), but its presence in the northwest of Madagascar is unconfirmed (Ref. 33664). The apparently restricted distribution of this species combined with ongoing deforestation and erosional situation within the river basin will inevitably increase stress on the habitat rendering the species vulnerable to future decline (Ref. 33664).
