Known from the Amazon River basin in Brazil, near the mouth of the Negro River, in the lower Abacaxis River, and in the lower Trombetas River (Ref. 36377). In 1993, 144,561 specimens were exported from Manaus for the aquarium trade; this may threaten the persistence of the species in the wild (Ref. 40602).
