Ranges from Alberta to Quebec (Ref. 52559). Restricted to the coasts of Hudson and James Bay, where it is caught to be smoked and eaten by subsistence fisheries and indigenous harvests (Ref. 117245). A commercial fishery once existed, no longer occurring (Ref. 52559). It is assessed as Special Concern based on the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (Ref. 117245). Also Ref. 3881.
