Occurs in Er Hai Lake (Mekong) in Yunnan (Ref. 38630), in Erqishi, Changjiang (Yangtze) rivers, Ulungur, Bosten, Tarim, Yili (Ref. 41093) and Tungting Lake (Dong ting) where it is known as "chi-yü" (Ref. 35840). Ten specimens were collected from Chaozhou City of Hanjiang River system; Dongjiang River; Sanshui County of Beijiang River system; Luoding County of Xijiang River system; others specimens from Anding County of Nandujiang River system, of Hainan Island (Ref. 7029). Introduced from its native range to other regions in the country for culture and stocking in all kinds of inland waters (Ref. 55380).
