Comments: | The redfish has great potential for aquaculture in Ecuador and several companies are currently trying to buy large quantity of eggs/yolks and larvae from the USA which apparently do not want to sell for fear of competition. In the meantime a few companies in Ecuador have broodstock fish in their labs and have been attempting to have red fish spawn through manipulation of environmental parameters such as light, temperature and hormones to induce spawning. Interestingly red fish have not spawned in Ecuador in spite of the efforts and some broodfish are older than 5 years weighting over 15kg. Ref: FAO, 1997 |
