Melanotaenia patoti is distinguished by the following combination of characters: V-VI-I,11-12 dorsal-fin rays; I,20- 21 anal-fin rays; 15 pectoral-fin rays; 33-34 scales on lateral line, 16-17 predorsal scales; 12-14 cheek scales; 16-18 total gill rakers on first arch 16-18; greatest body depth of adult male 36.9 % SL; colour in life generally greenish brown to bluish, grading to silvery white ventrally with series of orange-red stripes on side of body (Ref. 110723).
