Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Diagnosed from its congeners by having the following characters: conspicuous black midlateral stripe and conspicuous black line along lateral line in preserved individuals; in life, broad gold-orange stripe; lateral line yellow, bordered on each side by a narrow black line; 43-49 + 2-3 scales along lateral line; anal fin with 8-10½ (usually 9½) branched rays; snout rounded, projecting beyond upper lip; and eye diameter 3.8-4.0 times in HL, 1.3-1.5 times in interorbital distance; pharyngeal teeth in one row (5-5) (Ref. 59043).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Inhabits lowland water courses with little current (Ref. 26100). Also occurs in streams with moderate to swift current, often in cavities along shores. Feeds predominantly on insect larvae, supplemented by other animal and plant material. Deposits adhesive eggs, 1.9mm in diameter (Ref. 59043). Threatened due to pollution, habitat destruction (Ref. 26100), and water abstraction which is a serious threat over most of its range (Ref. 59043).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00955 (0.00556 - 0.01641), b=3.12 (2.98 - 3.26), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this species & (Sub)family-body (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  3.4   ±0.4 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Generation time: 9.2 ( na - na) years. Estimated as median ln(3)/K based on 2 growth studies.
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  Medium, minimum population doubling time 1.4 - 4.4 years (tmax=9; K=0.12).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (14 of 100).
