Etymology: Himantolophus: Greek, himas or himantos = leather strap, thong or leash (referring to the thick leathery illicium) + Greek, lopho or lophio = crest or tuft (referring to the baited illicium projecting from the head) (Ref. 86949).

Dorsal soft rays (total): 5; Anal soft rays: 4. Distinguishing characteristics of metamorphosed female: anterior escal appendage 2.7-23% SL; distal escal appendage 1.3-2.7% SL in specimens 3-5.5 cm, 9% SL in 8.3 cm specimen; pointed anterior pair of distal escal lobes, blunt posterior pair; posterior escal appendage 2.7-16% SL divided at base into 3 simple branches or represented by a transverse series of 3 simple filaments; posterolateral appendages 8-23, more or less arranged regularly in pairs on base of escal bulb; distal half of illicium, simple or divided into 2 or 3 branches, longest pair 8.9-30% SL (Ref. 86949).
