Remarks 'Snake', i.e., limbless scaled reptile, probably alluding to the variegated color pattern of this species. Alternatively, the name may be derived from the Dutch name for pike, i.e., Schnock or Snoek, introduced by Dutch immigrants (Regina Petz, pers. comm. 2003).
