Main Ref: 48502
Disease type: Viral diseases
Disease name: Koi Herpes Virus
Other names: KHV; False Fish Pox
Caus. agent: Herpes virus cyprini
Group:
Part of body and/or behavior affected by disease:
Skins and/or fins  Belly  Swimming behavior
 Gills  Anus  Other behavior

Fish affected:
Symptoms: Fish exhibits listless behaviour, scraping on objects and swim irregularly. Can show small bloody skin lesions and heavy slime secretion with whitish patches on the skin.
Treatments: No specific drug is available. Quarantine of infected fish is advisable. Fish recovery can be obtained by increasing the water temperature as quickly as possible, but by no more than 2° to 3°C a day. Do this until a temperature of 30°C or more is reached or transfer the infected fish to a separate tank, this is due to the fact that the virus is less active at higher temperature. This increase in temperature can cause secondary bacterial infection, so it is advised to treat it by a an anti-bacterial drug. An extra air or circulating pump is also necessary .
Prophylaxis: Avoid overcrowding, poor water quality, and stress. Buying immunised or vaccinated fish, or buying fish from a strong strain that is not susceptible to KHV can be a good prevention of the disease. Optimal care of the fish, and giving proper food. An immunization can also be administered.
Remarks: The excess slime is mainly present on the head and can rubbed off however real fish pox cannot be rubbed off.
