Max. size:  110 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 30 kg; max. reported age: 45 years
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 25 - 183 m
Distribution:  Western Atlantic: Bermuda and the coast of the USA from North Carolina to the Florida Keys and in the northern and eastern Gulf of Mexico. Reports from Cuba and the Bahamas are unsubstantiated.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 11-11; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-16; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 9-9
Biology:  Inhabits offshore rocky bottoms; most common between 60 and 120 m.
