| Diagnosis: | Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-10. Homalopteroides avii can be diagnosed from all congeners by having a wider gape of 28.5-33.3% HL. It further differs by having the following characters: a lateral cephalic stripe; a deeper caudal peduncle; 20-22 circumpeduncular scales; 9 pelvic-fin rays; a total pectoral-fin ray modal count of 15; 43-45 lateral-line scales (Ref. 96077).
