Family:  Haemulidae (Grunts), subfamily: Haemulinae
Max. size:  22 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; marine; depth range - 30 m
Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean: known originally from Beira, Mozambique to Knysna, South Africa; reported from the Red Sea and Gulf of Suez, but this might be a misidentification of Pomadasys stridens.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-14; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 6-7. Some specimens dark brown, with barely visible dark longitudinal stripes (Ref. 11228).
Biology:  Found mainly around fringing reefs.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 28 June 2018 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
