Family:  Melamphaidae (Bigscale fishes or ridgeheads)
Max. size:  10 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 400 - 1103 m
Distribution:  North Atlantic, Northwest Atlantic and central South Pacific.
Diagnosis:  Hard, sharp head spines. Scales on body and operculum intact (Ref. 37108).
Biology:  Adults found mainly below 400 - 500 meters, to 800 - 1,000 meters; juveniles as shallow as 50 - 100 meters (Ref. 51657).
IUCN Red List Status: Data deficient (DD); Date assessed: 15 July 2014 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
