Family:  Holocentridae (Squirrelfishes, soldierfishes), subfamily: Holocentrinae
Max. size:  18.2 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  pelagic-neritic; marine; depth range 100 - 190 m
Distribution:  Western Pacific: Philippine Sea, Borodino submarine.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 9-9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-13; Anal spines: 4-4; Anal soft rays: 9-9; Vertebrae: 27-27. This species is distinguished by the following characters: D IX,13; A IV,9; lateral line scales 46, above lateral line 3½ scale rows; gill rakers on first gill arch 12 = 5 + 1 + 9 (vs. 17 to 22 in congeners) ; big pointed spines on posterior operculum edge 2, with lower spine longer than upper spine; nasal fossa edges or on nasale surface without spine (Ref. 117152).
