Max. size:  26 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 168.5 g
Environment:  reef-associated; brackish; marine; depth range 5 - 40 m
Distribution:  Western Pacific: Gulf of Thailand to southern Japan, Philippines (Ref. 9494), Borneo and Indonesia. Absent from New Guinea and Australia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 74-78; Anal soft rays: 65-68; Vertebrae: 51-52. Description: Characterized by pale brown body color with 20-25 dark-edged brown cross-bars, arranged in pairs; black caudal fin with pale yellow spots, encircled by white base and confluent outer margin; caudal rays 15-18; lateral line scales on eyed side 107-115; ctenoid scales; small eyes with narrow, scaled interorbital space; tubular anterior nostril shorter than eye; ventral edge of head with fringe of short cirri; protruding caudal fin, but joined to dorsal and anal fins; greatest depth 2.4-2.7 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Inhabits shallow sand and mud bottoms of coastal waters. Feeds mainly on benthic invertebrates, especially small crustaceans. Marketed fresh, frozen, and dried-salted.
