Family:  Acropomatidae (Lanternbellies, temperate ocean-basses)
Max. size:  40 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 100 - 600 m
Distribution:  Eastern Indian Ocean to Western Pacific: NW Japan to NW Australia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 9-9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-10; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 6-8. Body red above, ventrally white. Scales large, deciduous. Inside of mouth cavity black.
Biology:  Feed on large crustaceans and mollusks. Utilized for human consumption (Ref. 637).

Country info:  Type localities: ZMB 10602 (holotype of Anthias berycoides); Tokyo Bay, NHMW 76073 (holotype of Doederleinia orientalis) (Ref. 75154). Known from the Pacific coasts off Fukushima Pref., Honshu, and Suruga Bay, Tosa Bay to Okinawa Trough and the East China Sea. Also in the Sea of Japan from south of Hokkaido to Honshu (Ref. 76993). Caught in winter by trawl nets off the Sanin District, the coast of the Sea of Japan. Also Ref. 11230.
