Max. size:  150 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 90 kg
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater, potamodromous
Distribution:  Asia: India.
Diagnosis:  This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: presence of both rostral and maxillary barbels; last simple dorsal ray weak and smooth; complete lateral line with 41+1 pored scales; scales in transverse line from dorsal-fin origin to pelvic fin origin 9/1/4; scales between lateral line and anal-fin origin 5½; gill rakers long and branched; proximal end of fifth ceratobranchial hook-shaped, with 5+3+2 teeth; presence of a black bar behind the opercle (Ref. 94728).
Biology:  Inhabits deeper part of clear fast flowing large jungle streams and rivers in upland areas (Ref. 41236).

Country info:  Known from Peninsular India: Krishna and Godavari rivers are its principal river systems (Ref. 4832). Found in Chaliyar (Nilambur, Kerala), Cauvery and Moyar; Meenmutti area, Periyar river and lake (Ref. 43638); Maharashtra (Ref. 43634); Bhavani River, Tamil Nadu (Ref. 44148). Destruction and changes in the ecological characteristics of the river in Sirur have contributed to the disappearance of the fish from there (Ref. 41236). Endangered or probably extinct (Ref. 41236, 45212). Also Ref. 40976, 43640, 45255.
