Comments: In the same year a second consignment from Sri Lanka was also brought in (Ref. 13364). Considered to have caused considerable damage to the fisheries. Recorded from the Chalakudy river, part of the Western Ghats, Kerala (Ref. 79567). Widespread throughout the country but not appreciated as its taste is poor, growth is stunted and competes with more popular local fishes (Ref. 1739, 6092). This introduction is also considered beneficial ecologically and socio-economically by some workers (Ref. 13364). Till 1970s the introduction of this species was considered to be a nuisance as it adversely affected the culture of Indian major carps and the low consumers' preference. But because of its hardy nature and because it is a low priced fish easy to breed the income community has developed preference for this fish. Also Refs. 13597 and 36777.     Ref:  FAO, 1997
