  Etymology of generic noun :   
A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335).
  Etymology of specific epithet :   
Notropis meaning back keel, and shumardi named after George C. Shumard, naturalist on the Mexican Boundary, who accompanied Girard on the boundary and railroad surveys (Ref. 79012).
